During the last 24 months, fighting between the Government of Sudan and two rebel groups in the Darfur region of Sudan has resulted in the deaths of more than 70,000 people. In addition, more than 2.2 million people continue to be affected. The United States Congress has shown consistent leadership on the crisis in Darfur and must continue to do so now by passing an amended version of the Darfur Accountability Act (S. 495) that includes clear accountability for gender-based violence.
